Creating Lifelong Readers
What a great day at Winterfield Elementary! Principal, Regina Boyd, helped make the State Superientent’s request of Give 5, Read 5 a reality. This year with the help of her staff, community and a very special Eagle Scout, the school was able to give each child at least 10 books. Each child took home a bag of books specifically selected for them on their level and interest by their teachers.
The students were gathered in an assembly where the excitement was growing. They were chanting READ, READ, READ! An announcement was made that the school had collected 12,307 books to give to kids! The students were anxiously awaiting to get their bags. As soon as they were handed their bag, with their name on it, they tore into the books. Many students went straight to reading (in a loud gym) and many others were excitedly showing their friends what books they got. One little girl came up to me to show me her Ramona books. She told me it was her favorite series and she had not read these two books. Another child was so excited to have Pinkalicious in Spanish. She said, I can’t wait to take this home and read it tonight!
Thank you Winterfield for inviting me to witness the growing of lifelong readers!
